I have had nothing but great success and protection from Sophos AV (www.sophos.com). I read a disappointing report recently that pretty much put Sophos toward the bottom of the major players in overall review.
Has anyone else used this product and can ANYONE tell me a legitimate bad story about SOPHOS not doing its job?
I know I can't.

I have only used it in limited capacity and have had good success with the product. I was not in love with the interface. I tend to steer clients to other products however: Avast! Free Edition, AVG for stand alone home or SOHO users and some of the bigger players for enterprise. I still find that regardless of the name of the product used, there still needs another level of client security for malware & spyware - there does not seem to be a magic bullet product on the market. I really like Malware BytesAnti Malware product for client scans.

I agree with all you've sad. If nothing else, SOPHOS could surely work on their GUI. Also, you're dead-on that there is no magic bullet. Running as many scans as possible seems to be the real solution for a suspcious file, but we know the processors can bog your system if you try to do too much. Norton always seemed to be the biggest culprit for that, but I'm hearing gooda bout their '2010' product, time will tell.

What kills me about Symantec is their product models. Enterprise level security products are nice, neat, clean and run on clients with little overhead. The consumer/SOHO engine is horrid and I think a system will actually run faster loaded with bot-net malware porn form Russia. The interface is awful and the personal firewall set-up is confusing to just about everyone. Have you ever seen the Simpsons episode where Home designs a car? He puts every bell and whistle on it to the point where it is unusable and expensive: http://simpsons.wikia... . I almost feel that name brand security client products for the home/SOHO market follow that trend. Stop trying to make it look expensive and charging an arm and a leg - just make it work for a fair price.

While it would be inappropriate of me to comment directly on a competitor, I'd like to say that I have always had a lot of respect for the team behind their products lines. Keep in mind that Sophos has always targeted the enterprise audience so it is to be expected that most of their effort will go to that line of products. Where it matters, the detection, they have always been consistently good and that matters the most to me.
Cheers, Morton

We migrated to Sophos (from Symantec) last summer. They recently scored at the front of the pack in an assessment of proactive capabilities, and while there are false positives I've found their HIPS functionality has detected every new malware that wasn't detected by signatures. It's performed very well on our workstations, though we've had some support issues.

Sorry to target one name brand player as they GUI's on many of the more recognized consumer level products suffer from the same issue. I am just a fan of a clean un-intrusive interfaces on any security system :)
